            News Update

      Doncaster Rovers

        Supporters Club

All future travel to games is postponed until we have guidance from the club and the football governing bodies.

A policy was put together and returned to the supporters’ board for final review before being made public on Monday morning.

Supporters Board members Len South, Paul Mayfield have showed their support for In Rovers Supporters We Trust:

Len South

“I always think how lucky we are to have a club that cares so much about its supporters. We are consulted on most things and even if we don’t always like the decisions taken, the club and the board are always honest enough to give us reasons.

“That has been the same throughout this process. We were consulted from the start and we can see that our thoughts and suggestions have been carefully considered and included within the proposal. This has been a collaborative effort which has shown us – if it were ever in doubt – that the club values us as supporters as much as we value our club.

“In the season that we celebrated the club’s 140th anniversary, the main thing for me is that our club is here not just next season but for 140 more seasons after that.”

Paul Mayfield

“2019/20 has been a season like we’ve never seen and hopefully will never see again but for me the most important thing is that we see another season and that we all have a club to support once things go back to normal.

“I know not all fans can donate their money to the club, but I’d ask any that can to do that. COVID-19 has taken so much – friends, family, loved ones. We’ve always trusted the club to do the right thing for us and now their trusting us to do the best thing for them.  Rovers til I die!

An update from chief executive Gavin Baldwin on August 12.

Dear Rovers fans

It is with more optimism I write to you this month and I need to thank you all for that.

Your response to our In Rovers Supporters We Trust strategy has been overwhelming.  In the past four weeks our refund liability from last season’s sales has gone from significant 6 figures to less than £30,000. While we are not out of the woods, your support in light of this pandemic has been truly magnificent.

We are still in for a difficult year, a lack of income from ticket sales is not something we can endure for long. While we are ever hopeful that we can welcome you back to Keepmoat Stadium soon we are mindful that if that cannot happen, then once again we will have a situation where we have a significant refund liability on season tickets, no ticketing income and potentially salaries to pay without the support of a furlough scheme.

The lockdown period was tough for Doncaster Rovers and Club Doncaster as a group. Although we are now able to operate our weekly car boot market and are once again taking bookings at the sports village, our core income streams have still not resurfaced.  This has unfortunately meant we are having to consider changes to our staffing structure and Darren will have to be wise in how he uses the transfer market.  Loan signings will be key to our squad structure next season as they offer the short term flexibility required to steer us through these difficult and uncertain times.

Darren and Adam have already began to make their moves though, with Jason Lokilo already confirmed and with other conversations progressing positively. With the salary cap agreed, we expect to be finalising negotiations soon with a handful of players.  In Darren, we have one of the most resilient managers I’ve worked with and he would rather give every chance to his preferred target joining before looking at alternatives, so please be patient with news as he likes to follow his process.  Sometimes, even after deals have been agreed we have to wait until the parent club completes other player transactions before we can announce too.

One thing that I know you will have been as delighted to see as I was, is that James Coppinger has signed a contract extension. I am so pleased that James stayed on for one more year, he has been a wonderful servant to this club and we can now give him the send-off he deserves.  It would have been devastating for all concerned if his Doncaster Rovers career ended without celebration.

With the players now back in training, we are edging ever closer to the start of the season. With everyone in football working at breakneck speed to accomplish the equivalent of 3 months’ work in the space of just a few weeks.

Based on some of the obstacles around COVID-19 and the need to have specific bubbles as we return to training, some of our pre-season friendlies will be behind closed doors at training grounds, where we are able to have media present to report or stream these we will do, but with some of our early fixtures this may not be possible. That being said, Darren believes we have set up a good pre-season plan, with competitive games against a number of EFL sides and at least one EPL side to be confirmed too.  We hope to be able to stream our final pre-season game from the stadium and are finalising those plans with both the opposition and EFL as we speak.

We are still expecting our season to start on the September 12 and league fixtures are expected to be released in around 2 to 3 weeks’ time.   We know early games will be behind closed doors, alongside all the other clubs in the EFL we are in continued dialogue with the EFL about iFollow and the streaming services we can offer.  They have had some great feedback based on the services they provided to Championship clubs for the end of last season and are using that to guide decision making.

Away from league matters, draws will be taking place imminently for the early rounds of the FA Cup and the League cup. The plan is still for all cup games to take place, and with the postponed Euro 2020 tournament impacting the end of the season and the start of the season delayed by five weeks, this will mean clubs will have a phenomenal amount of fixtures to fulfil in a short space of time.  When football does return fully, it will be non-stop.

It has been said before but this is a difficult year for us financially and the opportunities to grow revenue are limited, we were informed this week for instance that the FA Cup prize money will be half of its usual amount. Coupled with the issues we already know about through games behind closed doors and limited capacities when fans are allowed in and you can understand why it will be a difficult year.  Your continued support and patience (and I am aware we have tested both during these last few months) is invaluable.

I and everyone at the club genuinely cannot wait until we are back playing football in front of you all.

Stay safe.

Gavin Baldwin

CEO, Doncaster Rovers

Dear Doncaster Rovers supporters,

Thank you for your continued support this season and in particular over the past months. These are difficult times for us all and the level of commitment you have already shown to the club has been incredible.

I also want to thank you for your patience over the last few days as we finalised our plans with respect to our commitment to refunds and crediting those supporters who had already purchased tickets for any of our cancelled 2019/20 Sky Bet League One games.  The options we present today are for those with tickets for the 2019/20 season only.  We will update on options for those who have already purchased tickets for the 20/21 season, when we have clarity on what that will look like.

As a club, we take pride in the way we operate and hope that you do too.  We aim to treat all our fans with respect and integrity and value all of our interactions with supporters from all of our elite teams.  We built our refund policy in collaboration with our Supporters Board and reviewing the decisions of other clubs across the EFL, which have been varied.

Since the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic began we have seen almost all of our revenue streams diminish to zero. Ticket sales and other associated matchday incomes have stopped, and we have been unable to generate revenues from events such as The Killers concert and our weekly car boot market. Revenue from 5-a-side football pitch hire has also stopped and revenues from stadium and car park leases has diminished as other businesses also feel the impact of lockdown.

At the beginning of this crisis, the owners each put an additional six figures into the club to keep it going and since then both players and senior management have taken pay cuts or deferrals.  These actions, along with your continued incredible support through donations, lottery subscriptions and other purchases have no doubt helped us survive the last three months.

Despite these setbacks we have also continued to take our place in the community. We have organised food donations, we have helped raise money for the NHS through our online auction and members of our staff including Darren Moore have been volunteering for local charities such as b:friend to reach out to those who may be isolated.

The Government’s job retention scheme has without doubt helped ease the burden of paying staff salaries as we have been able to furlough the majority of non-playing staff.  However, as this scheme begins to slow down and as the country eases out of lockdown with shops, food chains and cinemas beginning to open, football is still to learn its long-term fate.  At present, we are planning for next season with a fear and expectation that at least some of it will have to be played behind closed doors. We have no knowledge of when our biggest income stream (ticket sales) is to return and yet we still have to plan for next season from a playing perspective.

It is against this backdrop that we issue our refund strategy - In Rovers Supporters We Trust.

For some time now we have used In Rovers We Trust as our mantra for fan engagement and asked you to trust us to do the right thing by you. More than ever, we need you as supporters to help us survive to ensure we have a football club to support in the future.

Having discussed and presented our refund policy to our Supporters Board, we have finalised the following options. In presenting these options we ask that if you are in a position to donate your compensation back to the club you do so in the knowledge it will help your club survive these challenging times. The word supporter has never been so relevant.

Regards

Gavin Baldwin
Chief Executive
